Rust removal

Cleanliness is the most important aspect of hygiene; it is also pleasing to the eye, but as always it requires constant maintaining. Generally most stains are easily removed, though at the same time, there is a group of spots that, if neglected for an extensive period of time creates huge problems that can cost a lot of effort and time. One of these types of stain is rust.

Most home owners tend to pay more attention to areas that are in plain sight and easily accessed during cleaning process, but places like sewage, pipes, behind toilet or show heads often being neglected. Typically we can say something like “Oh well, I’ll attend to those next time”, meanwhile moisture and condensation continues to build and in time start to develop rust spots, and ultimately begin to spread onto other areas of your bathroom.

Rust, most certainly is one of those types which makes the interior of your home unattractive. Before we’ll go over several ways how to get rid of it, let’s look at what causes it first.

Rust comes from interaction of oxygen with a raw metal. Also, it often appears in places with high humidity or during metal and water contact. Usually the surface of the metal parts is coated with various compositions to protect it from external influences, but if rust does occur, there are several rules and tips, compliance with which will help you remove rust stains from various types of surfaces at home:

  • eliminating rust from most surfaces requires use of acids. Therefore, you always need to have rubber gloves and wear them when working with chemicals;
  • make sure there aren’t any children and pets during cleaning. After completion, ventilate the room;
  • first, give a good clean to an area where there is rust spots, and wipe the area dry before taking care of rust.

Means to be used

There is a huge amount of rust removers and for each surface there is the right one. Often they have different formula that help reach desired results, but the use of harsh chemicals requires knowledge and skill and even with having read the instructions, it can be hazardous. We’ll consider use of chemical to be not the easiest. Instead, we’ll attend to more simplistic options, yet as effective, those that involve the use of improvised tools that can be found in your home:

  • tomato sauce. It should be applied to the affected surface, then the rust can be easily removed with a brush;
  • baking soda. You will need to make a thick mixture of baking soda and water. A paste-like substance then spread onto the surface for a while, then rinse up with water. For the desired effect, it is necessary to repeat several times;
  • coca-cola! Yes that coca-cola, that said by some does not belong in your stomach. Perhaps they have a point… We can have Coca-Cola or other carbonated drinks. However our choice falls in flavor of Coca-Cola, because it contains phosphoric acid, which eats corrosion;
  • rust converter. It is not a popular option due to the face that it only stops corrosion, but does not fight it, so it is more often used for prophylaxis or for treating new surfaces.

The tactics for removing rust from tile surface depends on the nature and complexity of contamination, as well as on the type of tile surface. From a glossy surface, fresh stains of rust can simply be wiped with a damp cloth. With stiffened and partially absorbed sports, it will be a little more complicated:

  • ammonia and oxalic acid. Apply oxalic acid to the stain and leave for one hour. After that treat it with ammonia. Wet a sponge with it and rub, then rinse it with a large amount of water;
  • hydrochloric acid. Be careful when working with it. It is necessary to apply a little acid to the surface and then rinse with plenty of water;
  • vinegar. Wet a sponge with vinegar let it sit on top of the rust spot for an hour. Then wipe with the same sponge and remove the corrosion. By the same principle, instead of vinegar, you can use kerosene.

Salt and lemon juice

When removing rust from a plastic or acrylic surface, you need to know one simple remedy. Salt should be poured into place with signs of corrosion. Then you need to take a lemon, make cut in in half and rub the salt with it. No need to leave it for a period of time, you can immediately begin to rinse the remaining salt and lemon juice. Repeat the procedure till desired effect.

Hydrogen peroxide

Another common remedy in everyday life. First, try applying peroxide substance to the stain, wait a while, and wipe with a cloth. If this does not help, then in addition to peroxide, you can also used additional tricks: liquid soap, baking soda, salt with it:

  • fill ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide, combine with one teaspoon of liquid soap, and ½ tablespoon of baking soda;
  • stir the components well;
  • apply the substance to the surface and leave it for 10-15 minutes;
  • if necessary, repeat this procedure;

If for some reason you do not wish to use any of the above methods, or simply trust the effectiveness of it, then of course there is a list of goods on the market and the choice is quite large. On our own behalf, we would like to recommend to avoid powdered products, but to focus more on gel-like or sprays.

Here are some of the products that we think worthy:
